ABOUT KALKAN
This quietly sophisticated and charming old Lycian village is situated in South West Turkey on the glorious Turquoise coast with the Taurus Mountains in the background. The quaint cobbled streets wind down to the pretty harbour below which is lined with chic restaurants and bars. This is a perfect place for a relaxing drink while you watch the gulets sail into the harbour. There are some lovely shops which sell just about everything, including beautiful local pottery, gold and silver jewellery, leather
handbags and designer jeans and T shirts.

Most of the restaurants are romantically situated on the roof tops of the old Ottoman houses with their wooden balconies trailing with bouganvillea and serve delicious International and local food. There is an interesting weekly market, 3 supermarkets which stock most items and a daily food market selling fresh fish, seafood, meat and vegetables from the local farms. The shops in Kalkan stay open until about midnight
7 days a week in the summer and the supermarkets provide free transport back to
your villa with the shopping! The Turkish people are extremely friendly and hospitable and children are made welcome in all restaurants. Kalkan is also virtually crime free. There are many interesting Lycian heritage sites to explore within about an hours
drive from the villa:

XANTHOS was the ancient Lycian capital but now all that remains is an impressive amphitheatre, part of an old church, some monuments and some amazing coloured mosaics.

SIMENA still retains a sarcophagus and part of a castle which stand in the shallows
of the harbour.

KEKOVA is a partly submerged Lycian city which is best explored by boat from Kalkan as the remains of the buildings can be seen in the water beneath the boat.

SAKLIKENT GORGE this magnificent gorge is where a torrent of water from the
Xanhos river rushes in and you can walk down on a rope with the help of a guide
- but be prepared to get very wet!

LEFOON was an important religious centre in the Lycian days and the remains of an amphitheatre and some temples are still standing. Kas is about a half hours drive
away and is a very pretty old harbour town with a very different atmosphere to Kalkan. There are some interesting carpet and curio shops to explore and Turkish tea
gardens by the sea to relax in. Gulets can also be hired for day trips along the coast
or to a small Greek island for lunch - but don't forget your passport!

FETHYIE which is about an hours drive away is a lovely old town with a stunning
harbour where smart yachts are moored. There are some lovely shops selling gold
and leather clothes for a fraction of the UK prices and some particularly good Turkish restaurants. There is a famous fish market here where you can buy freshly caught
fish and eat it at one of the nearby restaurants who will cook it for you and serve it
with a salad for about £3 per head. There is also a famous shop selling Turkish
delight made in a family factory. Exploring the glorious turquoise coastline by gulet
is a wonderful way of Spending a day and these trips can be booked either at the various agencies In the village or at the harbour.

A crewed day trip for up to 10 people costs about £100 and includes a delicious lunch and time to swim and goggle in some of the clear blue waters of the bays A three day crewed gulet trip will cost about £400 including all meal or you can hire a speed
cruiser for about £15 per day There are many other activities on offer including
canoeing down the Xanthos river to Patara beach, paragliding in Kas, fishing,
learning how to deep sea dive (Kalamar beach club) bird watching, walking the Lycian way (next to the villa) sailing around the coastline and every type of watersports.
